Recaro Sport Seats for Porsche 911

Recaro Sport Seats for Porsche 911

Recaro seats in a 911, they are usually moving away from factory comfort and toward either a “period-correct” classic look or modern performance. Because Recaro actually manufactured many of Porsche’s factory seats, the brand feels right at home in any 911 generation.

Here is how to choose the right Recaro for your specific era.

1. Modern Water-Cooled 911s (996, 997, 991, 992)

• Manual Adjustability

For modern 911s, the goal is usually better lateral support without losing the ability to use the car as a daily driver.

• Recaro Sportster CS: The “Gold Standard” for modern 911s. It is a hybrid seat—it looks and holds like a racing bucket but has a reclining backrest.

  • Why it works: It mimics the look of the factory GT3 seats but is much easier to live with. It features a folding mechanism for back-seat access.

• Recaro Pole Position (ABE): The classic fixed-back bucket.

  • Why it works: It is arguably the most comfortable fixed bucket on the market. The “ABE” version is designed for road use and features larger seatbelt slots to accommodate standard 3-point belts comfortably.

2. Ar-Cooled Classics (911 S, SC, 3.2 Carrera, 964, 993)

If you have an older 911, you generally want a seat that doesn’t look like a “spaceship” in a vintage cabin. Recaro recently re-released their “Classic Line” specifically for this.

• Recaro Classic LX: Best for a “Stock Plus” look. It has a vintage aesthetic but modern foam and support. Includes an extendable seat cushion for long-legged drivers.

• Recaro Classic LS: A step up in aggression. It features much larger side bolsters than the LX, perfect if you find your flat vintage seats aren’t holding you in during corners.

• Recaro Speed: A popular 90s/2000s choice for 964 and 993 owners. It’s a bit more “tuner” in style but offers excellent value and deep bolsters.

4. Critical Installation Notes

Installing aftermarket Recaros isn’t always “unbolt and bolt in.” Keep these three things in mind:

1. Airbag Lights: In 997-generation and newer cars, the factory seats have airbags and occupancy sensors. If you swap them for Recaros, you will get a dashboard warning light unless you install resistors or have the car coded by a shop.

2. Mounting Hardware: You will need three components:

   • Brackets/Baseframes: Connects the car floor to the seat.

   • Sliders: (Optional) Allows you to move the seat forward/back.

   • Side Mounts: Required ONLY for fixed-back buckets (Pole Position, SPG).

3. The “Narrow Cabin” Issue: The 911 (especially air-cooled models) has a very narrow interior. Some wider Recaro models (like the Sportster CS) can touch the door panels or the B-pillar. Always verify “911 fitment” specifically for your year.
