McLAREN M840 ENGINE

The McLaren GT and 720S use versions of McLaren’s 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine.

The 720S uses the M840T engine designation and produces 720 PS and 770 Nm of torque in factory specification.

The McLaren GT uses a related M840-series engine with specifications tailored to the GT.

M840T – McLAREN 720S

For the McLaren 720S, the M840T engine features:

• Displacement: 3,994 cc
• Configuration: V8
• Twin turbochargers
• Power: 720 PS
• Torque: 770 Nm
• Mid-mounted engine configuration
• Dry-sump lubrication
• Petrol fuel system

The exact engine specification should be verified from the engine identification label or engine number.

M840TE – McLAREN GT

The M840TE designation is associated with McLaren GT applications. Although it belongs to the same M840 engine family, the GT specification should not automatically be assumed to be interchangeable with the 720S M840T.

Differences may include:

• ECU calibration
• Turbocharger specification
• Ancillary components
• Intake components
• Exhaust components
• Engine wiring
• Sensors
• Mounting components
• Vehicle software

Verify the exact engine code before purchasing or installing.

ENGINE APPLICATIONS

Potential applications include:

McLaren GT

and

McLaren 720S

The correct engine must be selected according to the specific vehicle.

A 4.0-litre displacement alone is not sufficient to establish interchangeability.

COMPLETE ENGINE CONTENTS

If advertised as a complete engine, confirm which components are included.

Depending on the actual unit, this may include:

• Engine block
• Cylinder heads
• Crankshaft
• Pistons
• Connecting rods
• Twin turbochargers
• Intake system
• Fuel system
• Exhaust manifolds
• Alternator
• Starter motor
• Sensors
• Engine wiring
• Ancillary components
• Engine mounts

ECU, transmission and other vehicle electronics should not be assumed to be included unless specifically stated.

CONDITION

For a used McLaren engine, verify:

• Engine mileage
• Donor vehicle
• Engine number
• Running condition
• Oil pressure
• Compression
• Leak-down test
• Turbocharger condition
• Oil leaks
• Coolant leaks
• Diagnostic fault codes
• Service history
• Video of running engine, where available

If the engine has been removed from a donor vehicle, request the donor VIN and available service documentation.

ENGINE CODE VERIFICATION

Before purchase, compare the identification information on the engine with the original vehicle.

Verify:

M840T — McLaren 720S application
M840TE — McLaren GT application

The exact engine code should be confirmed from the physical engine or manufacturer’s documentation rather than relying solely on the vehicle model.

INSTALLATION

Installation should be performed by a qualified McLaren specialist.

1. Confirm the engine code.
2. Verify the engine number.
3. Match the donor and recipient VIN specifications.
4. Compare ancillary components.
5. Remove the original engine according to McLaren procedures.
6. Install the replacement engine.
7. Connect fuel, cooling, intake and exhaust systems.
8. Connect engine wiring and sensors.
9. Connect the transmission.
10. Fill the required fluids.
11. Program or synchronize applicable electronic systems.
12. Scan for diagnostic faults.
13. Check oil pressure and fluid temperatures.
14. Inspect for leaks.
15. Complete a controlled road test.

IMPORTANT FITMENT NOTICE

M840TE and M840T are related engine codes, but they should not be treated as identical engines without verification.

The McLaren GT and 720S have different vehicle configurations and engine calibrations.

Before ordering, confirm:

• Exact engine code
• Engine number
• Vehicle model
• Model year
• Donor VIN
• Recipient VIN
• ECU compatibility
• Turbocharger specification
• Ancillary components
• Included parts
