BMW E34 M5 S38B36 Engine and Getrag 280 Gearbox
S38B36 is a masterpiece of BMW M engineering, serving as the heart of the early E34 M5 (1989–1992). It is a direct descendant of the M88/1 engine from the BMW M1 supercar, featuring a massive cast-iron block, a 24-valve aluminum head, and individual throttle bodies (ITBs).
In 2026, the S38 has transitioned from a “high-maintenance engine” to a highly coveted vintage powertrain. As E34 M5 values climb, the cost of sourcing and maintaining these engines has risen accordingly.
